In physics, momentum is the product of mass and velocity. Simply put, it’s the amount of motion an object has, determined by two things: how much “stuff” is moving, and how fast it’s moving. But how does this translate to our everyday lives?
In life, momentum can be seen as forward motion - that sense of flow where everything seems to click into place. It’s the feeling when you’re in the zone, effortlessly ticking off tasks, making progress, and barely encountering resistance. Once you get started, it becomes easier and easier to keep going. Momentum builds.
On a psychological level, momentum often kicks in after small wins. Each success - no matter how small - fuels your confidence and energy for the next step. It’s like a snowball effect: the more you achieve, the more you want to achieve.
This is why so many people say, "Just start." Starting is often the hardest part, but once you’re in motion, your brain naturally craves that momentum, and it’s much easier to keep going than to stop.
HOW TO BUILD MOMENTUM

Building momentum doesn't require grand gestures - it’s about taking consistent, manageable steps. Here are a few practical strategies to get you started:
Start Small
You’ve probably heard this before, but it’s worth repeating: start small. Tiny actions are less overwhelming and easier to begin. When you break down a task into smaller, more manageable steps, it becomes less intimidating. Once you start, your brain naturally wants to keep going. And that’s how momentum is created.Be Consistent
Consistency is key. The more you build habits, the easier it becomes to get into a rhythm. By sticking to a daily routine, you reduce decision fatigue - that constant mental energy spent deciding what to do next. When your brain knows what to expect, it becomes much easier to simply show up and do the work.Remove Friction
Eliminate any barriers that might make it harder for you to start. If you’re planning to hit the gym in the morning, lay out your workout clothes the night before. If you need to study, make sure your materials are ready and accessible. By minimizing obstacles, you make the starting process frictionless - and it’s much easier to take action.Use a Calendar to Plan Your Day
A visual overview of your day can work wonders. Mapping out what you want to do, and what you have to do, creates clarity and focus. When your brain knows exactly what’s on the agenda, it can better prepare for the tasks ahead, making the whole day feel more manageable.

HOW TO PROTECT MOMENTUM

If you never lose momentum, you’ll find yourself moving through life at a pace that feels faster and more fluid than everyone else’s. This is perhaps the most important step: it’s just as crucial to protect your momentum as it is to build it.
Stay Consistent
As I mentioned earlier, consistency is key. Momentum thrives on consistency, not perfection. Here’s a rule to live by: Never miss twice. If you skip one workout, study session, or habit - fine. But don’t skip the next one. It’s the second slip that can break your rhythm.Reconnect with Your "Why"
Ask yourself: Why did I start this in the first place? Reconnecting with your purpose and the bigger picture gives you the energy to keep moving, especially when things get tough. Reminding yourself of your "why" provides the fuel to push through moments of doubt.Set Micro Goals
Long-term goals can feel daunting and too far away. That’s why breaking them down into smaller, more achievable milestones is essential. Set micro goals along the way — these small wins will keep you motivated and give you a sense of progress, even on days when the bigger goal feels out of reach.Watch Out for Momentum Killers
Be mindful of what can drain your energy and halt your progress. Negative self-talk, neglecting rest, and distractions are all momentum killers. Neglecting rest leads to burnout. Listen to your body, and don’t take rest for granted. It’s just as vital to your success as hard work.
